Show Motion, a theatrical scenery, equipment and supply company, selected Enhance a Colour to produce large and small visuals for the Broadway Musical “Elf”. The show ran from November 02, 2010 to January 02, 2011, however graphic production began in late July. Needing a quick turnaround, hand painting many different scenic backdrops was not an option. With a tight deadline, Show Motion turned to Enhance a Colour to produce 16 different buildings for the Stage Left and Stage Right portal in sizes varying from 9’ W x 11’ H to 13’ W x 30’ H.1

Enhance a Colour also produced several seamless sky drops that were 43’ W x 13’ H. For props, the production required UV direct four color plus white ink flatbed printed pieces die cut to resemble Santa’s toys. A “frosted vinyl adhesive” was used on several props. Enhance a Colour’s ability to print 16-foot fabric seamless by any length, and having an in-house pre-media department to help where needed were required to finish this project. In the end, Enhance a Colour was able to help Show Motion make “Elf” a success this Holiday Season!

Backlit Fabric
Enhance a Colour found a material that would offer great color that was easy to mount and backlight. The dye sublimation process enabled rich deep saturated colors with a larger color gamut than other methods allowed. Dye-sub ink becomes part of the fabric, yielding softer more flexible results that make it easier to reuse pieces in future years. Show Motion had no problems mounting the 16-foot poly poplin fabric to their wooden flats or back lighting the window area cut outs to make the buildings seem “life like” in a night or day scene.

Toy Props in Santa’s Work Shop
Enhance a Colour produced single sided toy props to hang within Santa’s work shop. Using the latest flatbed printing technologies, the props were created with four color and white UV inks printed direct to Sintra then digitally die-cut to the shapes desired. Matte UV liquid lamination protected the images from scratches. Enhance a Colour’s pre-imaging department traced artwork creating die-lines to route the props from UV printed Sintra material.

Enhance a Colour’s Pre-Imaging Department
Enhance a Colour’s turnkey operation with their full service Pre-Imaging Graphics department helped out with File Creation. Enhance a Colour’s pre-imaging department partnered with the show’s designers to prepare files looking as realistic as possible, drawing on over 40 years of color correction experience to match the designers’ drawings. Enhance a Colour’s professionals pitched in to make the buildings look life like.
