Challenge: The challenge was to make a pediatric dentist office into a place where kids would look forward to coming.

Solution: Working with Carel Lima of “All About Kids Teeth”, EaC was asked to create wall coverings that would make kids want to visit the dentist office. Using 3M graphics with a washable protective clear over laminate, EaC created cartoon like wall murals throughout the space. Wall murals were used in the reception area, the treating rooms and the digital X-ray areas. Once finished, the offices looked like play areas rather than a dentist office.

Four keys to creating Child-Friendly Spaces

When designing a child friendly space (CFS), it’s important to keep in mind the age of the occupant, and incorporating fun into the design.

Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Create a theme. Animals, Fire Engines, and Castles are timeless examples. Digital wall coverings can help set your background, and custom die-cut cutouts can bring life to the design.

2. Choose flooring that fulfills multiple needs. A carpet coordinated with your theme can make kids comfortable while absorbing sound and loud noises.

3. Get input from others. In addition to parents, enable girls’ and boys’ participation to promote inclusion and equity. When possible make teenage girls and boys thought leaders and decision makers in designing and implementing CFS’s.

4. Remember the fun. Consider custom game centers in lounges, or decorated reading areas in waiting rooms.
